Insect hotel or bee hotel? What the difference means in practice
The big tiered insect hotels stacked with pine cones, straw, bark and bamboo look wonderful in a photograph. In a real garden they tend to house woodlice, spiders and slugs — and very few bees.
Different animals want opposite things
Ladybirds and lacewings overwinter in dry, dark, tangled material. Ground beetles want cool damp litter at soil level. Solitary bees want warm, bone-dry, precisely sized tunnels in direct morning sun, a metre or more off the ground. You cannot satisfy all of those in one box: the damp layers that suit beetles raise the humidity around the bee tunnels, and the straw and cones give spiders a permanent ambush position across the entrances.
Combination hotels also tend to use unsorted bamboo — split, cracked, cut through nodes and all one diameter. Bees inspect those tunnels and reject them.

Do it separately, and mostly for free. Leave a log pile in shade for beetles. Leave leaf litter under a hedge rather than bagging it. Let a patch of grass grow long. Keep a shallow water dish with stones in it. Skip the pesticides. Those four or five habits do far more for garden invertebrates than any stacked box, and they leave your bee hotel free to be what it should be: a dry, sunlit wall of well-made tunnels.
